PTSD

Looking back at things the PTSD was there. It was years before I realized it.

COMMON SYMPTOMS & PRESENTATION

  • Intrusive Memories: Flashbacks, vivid nightmares, or sudden emotional triggers relating to specific past calls.
  • Hypervigilance: An inability to turn off the “combat” or “rescue” mindset, leading to constant scanning for danger, insomnia, and irritability.
  • Emotional Numbing: Sufferers may socially isolate themselves, pull away from family, or abuse substances to blunt their emotions.

BARRIERS TO CARE & RECOVERY

  • Stigma: A deeply ingrained “helper mentality” makes many retirees feel that asking for help is a sign of weakness or a betrayal of their resilient persona.
  • Delayed Diagnosis: Because symptoms often spike months or years after the final shift, retirees may not immediately connect their distress to their former career.
  • Specialized Treatment: Successful recovery usually requires culturally competent therapists who understand first responder dynamics, utilizing therapies like Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) or cognitive behavioral therapies.
